The transfer of Ederson from Manchester City to Fenerbahce has now been confirmed. The club has officially confirmed Ederson’s move to Turkey. The Brazilian goalkeeper leaves City as one of the most important players during Pep Guardiola’s reign as manager. Ederson will go down as arguably the greatest goalkeeper in Manchester City’s history. He has also played an integral role for the team that became the most dominant side in English football history.
It was clear from the moment Ederson arrived at City from Benfica that he was a different type of goalkeeper. The Brazilian international oozed class and composure, which stood out from his first match at the club. Nothing seemed to faze Ederson, whether that was in possession or as a goalkeeper. Over his eight years at Manchester City, he has changed how goalkeepers are viewed. Typically, goalkeepers were viewed as the last line of defence. But Ederson was so much more than that. In possession, he was integral to Manchester City’s play. His ability on the ball was on a par with some of the elite midfielder’s in the game. Ederson’s ability to play a long ball was also a significant weapon in their armoury. The fact that he has seven assists in the Premier League is a remarkable statistic.
The biggest testament to Ederson’s time at City is that he has changed how goalkeepers are viewed. A goalkeeper’s ability with their feet is now a key component of how keepers are now judged. Ederson sits at the very top of that particular category by some distance. Ederson is a once-in-a-generation type of goalkeeper. That isn’t a stretch, and Pep Guardiola’s side has been blessed to have had him at the club for eight years.
Besides his ability with his feet, Ederson was also a quality shot-stopper. That is often forgotten when Ederson’s performances as a member of Pep Guardiola’s squad are analysed. His performance during Manchester City’s 1-nil win over Inter Milan during the 22/23 Champions League final in Istanbul will go down in City folklore. He made several stunning saves to ensure Pep Guardiola’s side claimed their maiden Champions League crown. It was an exceptional performance from a brilliant goalkeeper. It was a performance that helped Manchester City claim the treble, and it was a display that solidified Ederson’s greatness.
Ederson leaves Manchester City after being an integral player in a side that has claimed 18 major trophies. Without him, Pep Guardiola’s side may not have reached the heights they did during his time at the club. The Brazilian goalkeeper’s influence at City sits alongside that of Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Vincent Kompany and any other modern-day City legend. Ederson will go down as a legend of the club.
Ederson thanked the Manchester City fans in a statement on mancity.com. That was a lovely touch on the way out from him. Speaking about the City fans, the Brazilian international said: “Finally, the fans. Thank you for making me feel at home in a city so far away from where I am from and for supporting me throughout what has been an amazing period for me and my family.”
“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together.”
“Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan of this special club. I’m going with my wife and children, but I’m leaving a big family here, Cityzens. Once a Blue, always a Blue.”
It must be said, thank you Ederson for everything you have done for the club. You have helped give us the ride of our lives and been an integral component of the most successful period in the clubs history. Good luck and best wishes on your next adventure. Your contribution to City will never be forgotten.
