Melvin Boel has been announced as Go Ahead Eagles’ new head coach. The 38-year-old former Dordrecht boss signs a three-year contract at De Adelaarshorst soon after Paul Simonis’ departure to VfL Wolfsburg.
Boel led Dordrecht for a sole successful season, with the side finishing fifth in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie before eventually losing in the play-offs against Willem II. In the years before that, he worked for various youth teams of Feyenoord.
In the 2022-23 season, Boel notably did an internship at Go Ahead Eagles under the leadership of René Hake. “My first contact with Go Ahead Eagles was back then under Kees van Wonderen,” he told club media. “After that, I did an internship under René at the club. When Go Ahead Eagles came on the line earlier this week about a possible head coach position, I didn’t have to think about it for long.”
Boel continued about his understanding of the Deventer team:
“I know Go Ahead Eagles as a warm club. The conversations with the management give me a lot of confidence. In these conversations with Jan Willem, Paul and Marc, it also became clear that the club is not yet at its end. There are still plenty of areas for development.” Boel also saw Go Ahead Eagles in action several times last season. “I attended two matches at De Adelaarshorst. I also visited a few away matches and was present at the cup final.”
Technical manager Paul Bosvelt: “We are happy that we were able to sign Melvin. We spoke with two good candidates, with Melvin having the advantage that he knows our style of play and working methods well due to his one-year internship under René Hake.
“Last season, Melvin was also a candidate when René left, but he had just signed with Dordrecht. Now it has finally worked out, and we are looking forward to working together.”
