April 30th 2005 is a date that Chelsea fans will remember fondly.

On this day 20 years ago, Chelsea claimed their first Premier League title with a 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers. Success for the West Londoners was their first in 50 years, as Jose Mourinho’s side swept to the title.

Mourinho had arrived the previous summer, announcing himself to an English audience as ‘The Special One’ in an unforgettable press conference. Fresh from taking an unfancied Porto side to Champions League success, the charismatic coach delivered on that billing.

Chelsea conquered England for the first time since 1955, with Frank Lampard’s double downing Bolton to seal the club’s coronation. The midfielder was named as the FWA Footballer of the Year for his performances, while teammate John Terry claimed the PFA Player of the Year Award.

Chelsea won the title in record-breaking fashion. At the time, no side had won more points in a season (95), won more games in a single campaign (29) or won more away games (15).

Their records for the fewest goals conceded (15) and most clean sheets (25) still stand and are records that look difficult to beat.

One of the greatest title-winning teams of the Premier League era.
