It was confirmed on Tuesday that the central defender had moved on from the Blades and had completed the switch to the Eredivisie outfit, who are managed by former Premier League striker Robin Van Persie.

News of his imminent departure was first broken by Rob Dorsett on Monday evening. Subsequently, The Star revealed that the Blades had pocketed £7 million for the 26-year-old, who had less than a year left on his contract. The deal is also said to include a number of add-ons and a sell-on clause.

He arrived at Bramall Lane three summers ago from Swedish club Malmo IF, for a fee of €4.5 million. He helped the Blades to get back to the Premier League in his first campaign with the club, and was also instrumental under Chris Wilder in their promotion push last season.

Following the official announcement of his move to Feyenoord, Ahmedhodzic took to Instagram to pen a message to his now former club and its supporters.

"First of all I would like to say a big thank you to all the Sheffield United supporters that have had my back ever since I arrived in 2022," the defender said.

"We’ve been through a lot together, ups and downs. We’ve shared beautiful moments and terrible moments on the pitch, but all of that creates a forever-lasting memory to cherish. I will always and forever be a Blade. Thank you for all the moments we’ve shared!

"To all the staff and people working around the club, it’s been a pleasure to come in every day and see all the positivity around the club. From both former staff members and new ones, we all always wanted the best for the club and worked towards it, so thank you for that!

"I had my 2 sons born in Sheffield and it will be a city that will always be in my family’s heart. This is where we leave now. A huge thank you to everyone and I love you all ❤️."

Two of his former teammates, Oli McBurnie and Rhian Brewster, commented on Ahmedhodzic's post to show their appreciation for him. "All the best ahki❤️❤️," said the Scottish striker, who had been linked with a Bramall Lane return this summer after one season with Las Palmas.

Brewster replied: "All the best my brother❤️." He was released by United earlier this summer.

Sheffield United need to plug Anel Ahmedhodzic gap quickly

Ahmedhodzic's departure creates further problems at the back for Ruben Selles as the new season approaches. He had to start Rhys Norrington-Davies and youngster Dovydas Sasnauskas in their final pre-season friendly versus Nice due to the Bosnian being ill and injuries suffered by Tyler Bindon and Jack Robinson.

United are looking to address this issue quickly, though, as they have been linked with Hull City's Charlie Hughes, who worked with Selles during his time at the MKM Stadium. They will face competition from fellow promotion hopefuls Coventry City in that race, though, as they are also reported to be interested in the former Wigan Athletic youngster.

Whichever way they go with finding a replacement for the Bosnian, they need to do it fast. Their opening match of the 2025/26 campaign, at home to Bristol City, is just three days away. They won't want to enter what is a crucial season for the club without proper depth in defence.
