La Liga champions Barcelona have on Thursday announced a major change in the captaincy situation in Hansi Flick’s squad.

This comes amid confirmation that Marc-André ter Stegen, as expected, has been relieved of his leadership duties in the Blaugrana dressing room.

Shot-stopper Ter Stegen grabbed the headlines in Catalunya’s capital for all the wrong reasons this week, after refusing to sign the club’s medical report regarding his recent injury.

As much was considered the final straw by those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou, long bemused with the actions of the club’s long-time no.1.

In turn, as alluded to above, Ter Stegen has on Wednesday officially been stripped of the captain’s armband.

The 33-year-old’s replacement, for the time being at least, has also been named, in the form of Ronald Araújo.

‘FC Barcelona hereby announces that, following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the Sporting Direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain.

‘During this period, the duties of first captain will be assumed by the current vice-captain, Ronald Araújo.
