Spain’s victory over Germany in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarterfinals last night came at a cost as La Roja lost key midfielder Pedri to an injury.

The 21-year-old had to come off just eight minutes into the match after an ill-timed challenge from Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos caused the knee injury.

Spain confirm nature and extent of Pedri’s injury

It was suspected that Pedri’s Euros were over after the injury and now, Spain have officially confirmed that the midfielder has a grade 2 lateral sprain, meaning he will no longer participate in the tournament.

However, the statement from the Spanish Football Federation added that Pedri would remain in Germany with the rest of the squad until their journey is over.

“Following tests carried out on international player Pedri González, the Canarian player has a grade 2 internal lateral sprain in his left knee,” the statement read.

“The footballer will remain with his teammates until the end of the current training camp, which is focused on the Euro 2024 tournament.”

Six weeks out

As was suspected and reported soon after the injury, Pedri is now expected to be sidelined for a period of six weeks.

It would mean that the 21-year-old would stand to miss Barcelona’s pre-season preparations under new manager Hansi Flick, while he might not be ready in time for the start of the new campaign.

It is certainly a cause for concern for Barça, considering how important Pedri is to the team. Given his track record with injuries, the Catalans will hope that there are no lasting effects from this latest setback.
