An eventful match on Saturday afternoon saw a number of Newcastle United players raising concerns during the match.

After the game, Eddie Howe gave an official update on two of those Newcastle United stars.

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon, who took a blow to nose inside the Spurs penalty area, though no penalty given:

“I think it was just a cut.

“It was a nasty one.

“He had blood all over him, so he did well to get back onto the pitch.

“Hopefully, it was nothing more than that though.”

Eddie Howe on the returning Sven Botman, who limped off early (in the very lengthy!) added time, replaced by Lloyd Kelly:

“I don’t think it was anything more than cramp for Sven Botman.

“Which was expected, given the amount of time he has been out.

“It was a great effort from Sven Botman to last that long.

“We were unsure how long he would be able to go for, with the speed of the Premier League.

“Thankfully though, he got through the majority of the game.

“The thinking behind it [Sven Botman’s return] was that he had done the work.

“I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t feel that he was physically ready.

“He has been very dedicated to his recovery.

“We have seen him put in an extraordinary amount of work before he started training with us… and he has now been training with us for six weeks now.

“He has had three [preparation] games and looked good in those games.

“He won’t of course be at his optimum level but that will come in the following months.

“I thought he was physically ready to play and mentally ready too.

“He has been champing at the bit to play again.

“It was a difficult start for him and the team with Tottenham scoring, but it was a great response, I thought he did very well.”
