Official: Girona sign ex-Atlético Madrid star | OneFootball

La Liga outfit Girona have this week announced a fresh addition to the club’s midfield ranks.

The player to have put pen to paper on terms at the Estadi Montilivi? Axel Witsel.

Veteran midfielder Witsel for his part spent the last three seasons plying his trade on the books of Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid.

With the Belgian now 36 years of age, though, the Rojiblancos recently made the call not to offer Witsel an extension to his expiring contract terms.

The 132-time capped Red Devils international, in turn, became available as a free agent.

A number of clubs are understood to have expressed a keen interest in his services in the time since.

After Witsel gave priority to staying put in Spain, though, it was the aforementioned Girona who positioned themselves at the front of the queue for Witsel’s signature.

And as alluded to above, this week, as much has culminated in the Catalans landing their man.

As per a statement across the club’s website and social media platforms:

‘Girona FC has signed the Belgian international midfielder Axel Witsel, who joins as a free agent after finishing his time at Atlético de Madrid. The player signs for one season with an option for another based on objectives.’
