Emerson Royal has officially put pen to paper and joined the Rossoneri, arriving from Spurs.
Emerson is a name that has circulated around the orbit of Milan since the beginning of the summer, and today everything became official, with the Brazilian undergoing his medical and signing the deal.
The 25-year-old is coming to reinforce the backline of the Diavolo, which is in need of another fullback especially after the long-term injury of Alessandro Florenzi, who’ll only return in 2025.
“Milan is delighted to announce that Emerson Aparecido Leite de Souza Junior, better known as Emerson Royal, has joined the Club on a permanent basis from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club,” a statement reads. “The Brazilian defender has signed a contract with the Rossoneri until 30 June 2028 with an option for a one-year extension.
“Born in São Paulo (Brazil) on 14 January 1999, Emerson Royal started his career playing youth football for Ponte Preta, with whom he made his first-team debut in February 2017. He made 25 appearances and scored one goal for the Campinas-based outfit. In 2018, he joined Atlético Mineiro (23 appearances and one goal) before signing for Real Betis in January 2019. He ended his time in the South of Spain with five goals in 79 appearances. Following a brief stint at Barcelona, his most recent spell was at Tottenham, where he made 101 appearances and scored four goals since his arrival in 2021.
“He has won ten caps for Brazil, having made his debut in November 2019. Emerson Royal will wear the number 22 shirt.” Emerson is the third signing of the Rossoneri this season after Álvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlović, he cost the Diavolo €15m plus bonuses.
