In a communiqué, the France Football Federation (FFF) have confirmed that Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana (23) has withdrawn from the France squad for the upcoming international break, whilst Inter Milan’s Benjamin Pavard (28) has been announced as his replacement.
Fofana had initially been called up by Deschamps, however, Chelsea are still managing a knee injury that saw him miss the entirety of the last campaign. This knee injury continues to prevent the former Leicester City and AS Saint-Étienne man from playing two games per week. The decision to drop Fofana from the squad was a joint one, taken between the medical staff from Chelsea and from Les Bleus’ set-up.
It is Pavard, who has been selected by Deschamps since the Euros, who has taken his place. His last performance for Les Bleus came at the start of June in a pre-Euro 2024 warm-up game against Luxembourg. France face Italy and Israel in the UEFA Nations League during the upcoming international break.
