In what was mostly an entertaining encounter, Nottingham Forest were punished at the weekend for an extremely poor 11-minute first-half spell against Newcastle.

Callum Hudson-Odoi had given Forest an early lead, which lasted until Lewis Miley’s equaliser in the 23rd minute. But the away side fell apart after that, with Jacob Murphy and an Alexander Isak brace giving Newcastle a 4-1 lead just after the half-hour mark.

Forest rallied after the break, scoring in the 63rd and 90th minutes to pull the game back to 4-3. But it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.

Reflecting on the game afterwards, Hudson-Odoi called on his team to respond in their midweek fixture against Arsenal.

“We have to learn from the first half, we can’t have something like that again,” Hudson-Odoi said. “We’re going to make sure we rectify that in the days coming up to the next game on Wednesday.

“We have another 12 games of the season left so we just have to put everything right on Wednesday and keep pushing until the end of the season.

“We’ll reflect on this properly, look at ourselves, individual mistakes and things we did wrong as a team and look to rectify everything and have a good rest of the season.

“We lost against Newcastle, but we have to go again and push ourselves even harder in every game we play for the rest of the season.”

Arsenal fans will be looking to their team for a similar response on Wednesday, having also lost their weekend fixture against West Ham United.

The Gunners go into Wednesday’s game in Nottingham six points clear of third-place Forest, but that gap could easily be cut to three with a home win.

Mikel Arteta’s side would then find themselves increasingly looking over their shoulders rather than trying to chase down leaders Liverpool.

Both teams are going to be desperate to secure all three points in midweek.
