George Earthy has proven a useful addition to the Bristol City squad since arriving on loan in the summer from West Ham.

The midfielder hasn’t been a key part of Liam Manning’s side, but has contributed with 21 appearances from 30 league games, including five starts.

The 20-year-old has been unable to register a goal or an assist in the league, with last weekend’s clash against Oxford United being his first start since 14 December.

With the January window closed, and attention turning to the summer market, the Robins will have to weigh up whether to pursue a potential permanent transfer.

When asked about a potential summer permanent move for Earthy, FLW’s Bristol City fan pundit Jack Buchanan claimed that it’s not one he would recommend.

He believes the youngster has been underwhelming so far, suggesting there will be better options in the free agent market that they should look towards instead.

“When it comes to George Earthy, I think it’s a bit of a strange one,” Buchanan told Football League World.

“He’s really just not shown anything.

“I don’t know if he’s got any goals or assists this season.

“But he’s really just not shown it for me, not at all.

“He had a really good chance against Oxford this weekend when we were down to nine men, he got put clean through on goal, I think, by Max Bird.

“He picks the ball up on the halfway line, looping ball over the defender, brings it down really well and he has a good 20 yards or so to set himself.

“But he gets the ball stuck under his feet, doesn’t make his mind up quick enough and Cameron Brannagan comes across and sweeps the ball away.

“So, for me, I wouldn’t make it a permanent signing.

“I think there are probably better options out there we could get on a free in the summer.

“I can’t think of any names off the top of my head, but obviously there’s free transfer XIs out this time of year.

“And, obviously, heading into the summer, there’s between now and the end of the season.

“But, yeah, not one for me, that I would look to make into a permanent deal.”

Bristol City are currently ninth in the Championship table, just two points adrift of a play-off place.

George Earthy not doing enough for Bristol City

If Bristol City are going to weigh up a move for Earthy in the summer, then they will surely need to see more from him to justify a permanent deal.

It would of course depend on the potential fee involved, but he hasn’t done enough to justify a substantial fee being spent.

Another loan deal might prove useful for all parties, as it’s clear that he’s not ready for regular minutes at West Ham just yet.

Given the club’s play-off push, Earthy will really need to step up his performances in the last 16 games of the season in order to convince the Robins that a permanent move would be worthwhile.
