Norwich City are reportedly interested in signing Celtic winger Yang Hyun-jun this summer.
According to Sky Sports this past weekend, the Canaries are keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, with Borja Sainz’s exit to FC Porto finally sealed for £14.25m.
The Norfolk outfit are now without a key winger going into next season, and a like-for-like replacement will be needed to fill in for the 18 goals the Spaniard scored last season - and Hyun-jun is said to be one the players on the club's radar.
The South Korea international has featured 47 times in the Scottish Premiership since his move from Gangwon FC in 2023, contributing six goals and five assists in that time.
When asked whether Yang was a suitable replacement for Sainz, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes claimed that he’d expect a second winger to come in alongside the Celtic player, if he did move to Carrow Road.
However, he is unsure whether a move will come to fruition, claiming a Premier League loanee and a bigger name are the two likelier options to join the club this summer.
“I think if he were to replace Sainz, he’s not really done enough to prove that he could be that replacement,” Downes told Football League World.
“I know that Celtic fans aren't too bothered about him leaving, although they’ve not given him much of a chance because he’s not been there for very long.
“But I’d imagine he wouldn’t be a replacement, he’d be an extra guy.
“And it seems like it’s not on the cards anymore, and the word is we’re looking elsewhere, which is probably a good idea.
“If he’s not quite at that level, then it’s always good to be looking around.
“But, I’d imagine that we will be looking for two more wingers at least, one to replace Sainz and one as a Premier League loan.
“I think that’s the most realistic transfers that we’re going to have.”
If Yang was brought in as the sole replacement for Sainz, then Norwich supporters would likely be quite underwhelmed by that business, given the fact he's not really been much of a starter at Celtic.
But he could be a suitable secondary option to have in the squad if another bigger name also arrives as well.
The advantage of signing the 23-year-old over a loanee from the top flight is that he’d be a permanent player that wouldn’t need to be replaced in 12 months, even if a permanent fee would be more costly in the short-term.
Given the importance of Sainz to the squad, Norwich need to get the move for his replacement right as otherwise it could have quite an impact on their attacking threat next season.
