Jeffrey Schlupp’s wages have been cited as a potential stumbling block to a possible move to Paradise next season…

The Premier League winner is currently on a temporary loan deal with Brendan Rodgers’ side after Crystal Palace allowed him to leave in the January transfer window, where Celtic had been scouring the market for squad additions at left-back.

Alex Valle returned to Barcelona, before being shipped out to Como in Italy, with Rodgers preferring Greg Taylor in the starting berth for most of the season up until that point. However, it has been clear for several seasons now that Taylor has been needing competition on that left side of the defence and the squad lacks depth and options for this particular position.

Sclupp has definitely brought pace and power to the role, combined with a wealth of experience in the English Premier League too. The only question is if Jeff fancies upping sticks and joining on a full-time basis when his contract expires in June with the London outfit. It didn’t appear like Oliver Glasner will stand in his way, but with a reported wage of around £60K per-week, any move would hinge on the former Leicester man taking a significant pay cut to sign for the Hoops.

“I think that is a big ask for Celtic”

Jamie Murphy and Andy Walker were both speaking about the powerful utility man on the Go Radio Football Show, and Murphy reckoned that any deal would be solely dependent on wages. “I’m sure he will want to take it, if they offer him that amount of money,” Murphy claimed. “But to pay that money per week for a player who is not going to be a guaranteed starter, I think that is a big ask for Celtic.”

The former Hibs and Motherwell winger insisted that at the right price though, signing Schlupp would make perfect sense. “I know he is in his 30s, which is another factor which might come into play. But if you can get him for cheaper than that then, yeah, I am with you it is a no-brainer. I just think the fees involved make it a lot more difficult.”

“The number one left back will be Kieran Tierney”

Meanwhile, fellow Go Radio pundit, Andy Walker, added: “I think he can play in a number of positions. I think when you look at next season, the number one left back will be Kieran Tierney. If Kieran Tierney is fit, he will play. Schlupp can play in a number of positions, I’ve watched him in midfield, he is a driving force, he has a good engine, you can see how athletic he is. I think he has a lot to add. He can play in a number of positions, if the offer is there, I think he would want to stay on.”

Let’s add some clarity

A little clarity here is required. Jeffrey Schlupp is currently on £60k per week – Premier League wages – at Palace. That though ends in June and then he’s not on any salary. Celtic are currently paying percentage of the salary but that ends in June too when the player becomes a free agent.

His own agent will no doubt be lining up opportunities and will speak to Celtic to see what offer – if any – is on the table. Other clubs may well do likewise and the player can make a call.  And we have seen with Joe Hart and currently Kasper Schmeichel that there is no better way to bring your playing career to a close than a few season chasing glory at Celtic.
