There are already major plans afoot for Chelsea’s summer, and as well as the signings that everyone’s getting excited about there are going to be major departures too.
One that has looked increasingly likely as the season has passed has now been all but confirmed by top German insider Florian Plettenberg.
The Sky Germany transfer insider yesterday Tweeted that Christopher Nkunku “has decided to leave Chelsea this summer,” and there is “no longer any doubt about it.”
While he is still on the contract he signed when he arrived less than two years ago, which runs until 2029, “talks are ongoing” about moving him on. We’re already working on players to come in and replace him, hopefully with profiles that better fit our team and its needs.
There’s already a strong suspicious that Nkunku has played his final minutes for Chelsea already, given he’s not in the squads anymore.
Florian Plettenberg’s Tweet about Nkunku’s potential departure from Chelsea in the summer of 2025.
Unlike some players they’ve tried to shift in the past (and plenty that they will go through this with this summer), Nkunku should have a decent market.
He’s struggled with us, but he’s still got a great reputation as a player, he’s not on crazy wages, he’s not had devastating injury problems. It’s just not worked out for him here, and we think plenty of teams will be willing to take a punt on him.
The question is how much we will ask for, and how much teams are willing to offer. We’re under no pressure to sell, given how much contract is left, and a loan with an option is certainly a possibility in the case of the Frenchman.
As always, however, we suspect we’d prefer a clear break and a plain sale.
