Nicolas Jackson has just scored for Chelsea against Everton at Stamford Bridge, today ending an incredible run of 13 games without a goal that also included a two month spell out injured.
It meant so much to him – he was weeping tears of joy after finally finding the net. There’s certainly been plenty of criticism of him during that period. But it’s worth bearing in mind the positives around him.
Tom Coley of Football.London has pointed out that that goal makes it ten in the Premier League for Jackson this season, despite the major drought in the middle. That makes him the first striker since Diego Costa to notch ten or more in consecutive seasons for the Blues.
Amazingly, only two players in any position have done it – you won’t be surprised to hear it’s Cole Palmer and Eden Hazard. Not bad company for Jackson to be keeping.
Of course, it also says a lot about the nightmare that we’ve had in trying to replace Costa since he left. The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz have come and gone for vast fees without managing even this relatively basic feat.
Nicolas Jackson stats.
It’s been clear since the moment he arrived at the club that he was going to be a rough diamond who needs to be worked on and developed. He’s got so many qualities, but we’ve seen just how streaky he is. Hopefully this goal, the first he’s ever scored from outside the box, triggers a positive streak to balance out the negative one he’s just finished.
The tears tell you a lot – he’s emotional, perhaps too emotional to ever be a really consistent, clinical finisher. But there’s a lot to like, and a lot to work with.
