Newcastle United are hopeful again of signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi before the transfer window closes a week from this Friday, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Guehi has been the top defensive target for Newcastle this summer but negotiations with Crystal Palace have been anything but straightforward.

Newcastle have failed with as many as four bids with many at the club feeling Palace’s demands for the defender are excessive.

The Magpies have been looking at alternatives but the club have continued to hold talks with Crystal Palace in hopes of a breakthrough.

And it has been claimed that there could be light at the end of the tunnel for Newcastle as the gap between their offer and Palace’s asking price has come down.

The two clubs are now just £5m away from reaching an agreement over a fee for Guehi’s transfer.

The breakthrough in negotiations has rekindled hopes at Newcastle of getting their hands on the England defender.

Newcastle are optimistic again of getting their top defensive target before the window closes on 30th August.
