A Newcastle United season ticket waiting list to be introduced?
Plenty of other Premier League clubs have them.
Fans still awaiting news from the club on exactly what the new stadium plans are to be.
With hopefully a lot bigger capacity to come, would it now make sense to introduce a Newcastle United season ticket waiting list for interested fans? Assuming extra season tickets will at some point be made available…
Always interesting to see what is happening elsewhere at other clubs.
Aston Villa are one of those Premier League clubs who have a season ticket waiting list.
They have now given it a shake up…
Aston Villa official announcement – 29 May 2025:
To reward loyalty and commitment from our active fans, we have reviewed and subsequently changed the Season Ticket Waiting List system.
At the end of the 2024/25 season, there were approximately 45,000 people on the waiting list: 46% of those have not bought a ticket in over two years (2023/24 and 2024/25).
The Club identified that there was a need to create a genuine list which prioritises dedicated supporters through a transparent points-based system, particularly in light of the ongoing stadium expansion and the significant number of season tickets that will be available in 2-years’ time.
This requirement has resulted in the following changes to the waiting list criteria.
Season Ticket waiting list criteria:
At the end of the current 2024/25 season, the season ticket waiting list will be reordered based on a points system with points awarded as follows;
100 points for current members of the AVFC Membership scheme
+1 point for attendance at each EPL Home League game over the last two seasons
+2 points for attendance at each Domestic or European Cup Home game over the last two seasons
Those on the waiting list with zero points will be removed from the list
From the 2025 / 2026 season, attendance at Women’s home matches will also earn points.
All those supporters wishing to join the list from the point of its reorganisation, will need to pay a one-off £10 fee which will be redeemable against the price of a season ticket when supporters are able to purchase one.
All supporters on the Season Ticket Waiting List will be informed of their position on the new list ahead of any new season tickets being offered for sale.
It is likely that a number of new season tickets will be offered for sale each season. Furthermore, any new season tickets offered for sale following the completion of the North Stand extension will be offered to those supporters on the waiting list.’
My conclusions?
Some very interesting things to take from what Aston Villa have detailed with their season ticket waiting list.
I think overall, the shake up they have carried out is very positive.
How they have allocated points now for each one on the waiting list is fair enough in my eyes, apart from one point. It is beyond cynical to try and force fans to go to the women’s matches simply to gather extra points and go further up the waiting list.
I think if a Newcastle United season ticket waiting list were to be introduced, then I think the Villa example of now needed a small financial commitment to go on the list, is fair enough.
The fact that around 21,000 (46%) of the 45,000 Aston Villa fans who were on their season ticket waiting list, hadn’t bought a single match ticket between them these past two years, makes it all a bit of a nonsense having them included. If you haven’t bought a single ticket these past two seasons when Villa have been so successful, a bit of a leap to believe that these same people would then buy a season ticket of available.
Obviously this is just a ‘What if…’ conversation as things stand, but if a Newcastle United season ticket waiting list was introduced, the club have computer records going back decades, how many season tickets and match by match tickets that officially registered NUFC fans bought over the years. So I was just wondering what Newcastle fans would think about that history also being used to help decide the positions on a Newcastle United season ticket waiting list?
