In a recent report, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder revealed that Newcastle United have stepped up their efforts to land Burnley keeper James Trafford. It has been stated that the Magpies are eager to get a deal done for the English goalie this off-season.

Trafford’s Excellent Form At Turf Moor Last Season

Trafford enjoyed a solid campaign in the EFL Championship recently as he produced a series of impressive displays in goal for the Lancashire club. The 22-year-old featured in 45 matches for Burnley last season, conceding 16 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets across all competitions.

The English talent has proven himself to be a solid keeper in English football. However, the jury is still out on whether he can perform at such a high level in the Premier League. Still, it is no surprise that Newcastle are pushing hard to land him this summer.

His current contract at the English club will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for the Magpies to sign him on the cheap in this transfer period.

Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Snap Trafford Up?

Trafford can use his quick reflexes to make a few solid saves at the back. He is a good handler of the ball as well and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when being chased down by the opposition attackers.

The English goalie also doesn’t shy away from using his strong 1.92m frame to collect crosses and loose balls inside his penalty area. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in Premier League football.

Still, we can expect Trafford to push Nick Pope for a regular first-team spot at St. James’ Park. He would no doubt enhance the quality of Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s backline.
