In a recent report, Sky News mentioned that Newcastle United are in talks to sign Burnley keeper James Trafford this summer. It is understood that the Magpies have identified the English goalie as a target for this summer transfer period.
The 22-year-old produced a series of solid performances in between the sticks for the Lancashire club last season. Trafford shipped in just 16 goals in 45 appearances while securing 29 clean sheets for Burnley in various competitions.
The English custodian had the best season of his career in the EFL Championship. However, only time will tell whether he can replicate his good form in the Premier League if the Magpies manage to bring him to St. James’ Park this summer.
Trafford’s current contract at Burnley will expire in the summer of 2027. Thus, Newcastle United would have to make a convincing offer if they want to sign the gifted keeper in this transfer window.

Trafford is a good handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make a few crucial saves at the back for his team. He doesn’t mind coming out of his lines to clear the danger when needed.
The English keeper can even use his towering 1.92m frame to dominate his penalty area by coming out to collect crosses and loose balls. However, there are some concerns over whether he can perform at such a high level in the Premier League if Newcastle manage to snap him up in this summer transfer window.
Trafford would add more quality to Eddie Howe’s goalkeeping department. He has what it takes to rival Nick Pope for a regular first-team place at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.
At 22, the future looks quite promising for Trafford as long as he continues to improve with each year. Thus, the Tyneside club should focus on getting a deal done for him this summer. Trafford could even help the Magpies challenge across all fronts over the next few years. With all things considered, Howe should try everything in his power to lure the English goalkeeper to Tyneside before the start of the new campaign.
