Eddie Howe has said it is ‘frustrating’ that Newcastle’s top talent continue to be linked with transfers away from the club.
Tino Livramento is the latest Newcastle player to be subject of transfer speculation. Reports this week have suggested that Manchester City are considering the 21-year-old as a potential long-term replacement for Kyle Walker.
The rumours around Livramento follow similar speculation surrounding Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon in recent months.
Speaking ahead of the club’s FA Cup fifth-round tie with Brighton on Sunday, Howe was keen to dismiss the rumours.
He said it is ‘frustrating’ to be ‘constantly talking about players leaving’ St James’ and reiterated his ambition to build a trophy-winning team on Tyneside. Howe wants the focus to be on incomings rather than outgoings in the North East.
“I think it goes without saying, it is frustrating for us that we are constantly talking about players and rumours of them leaving,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
We want to go the other way, we want to go the other way and strengthen the group. We want to make our team and squad stronger for the future rather than lose our best players.”
Howe held on to Martin Dubravka in the January transfer window, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League. The Slovakian goalkeeper has lost his place in the team to Nick Pope for the last two games, but Howe was unwilling to make a call on who is his number one.
“I think we take it on a game by game basis as we do with all team selections. Part of the game is players can change your mind either way. We are always looking to pick our strongest team and it is up to the players to confirm their place or not.”
