Newcastle United are weighing up a move for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Šeško, should star striker Alexander Isak depart this summer, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The Magpies have maintained long-term interest in the Slovenian international and view him as a prime candidate to lead their line if they are forced to part ways with Isak. However, any potential deal for the 22-year-old would be financially demanding, and far from straightforward.

Speculation over Isak’s future intensified after it was reported on Thursday that the Swedish international has expressed a desire to leave and is not travelling with the squad on their pre-season tour. Liverpool have reportedly made an approach for the 25-year-old, despite Newcastle’s firm stance that the striker is not for sale.

Šeško has attracted significant attention in recent months. Arsenal had closely monitored the Leipzig forward as they searched for a new No 9, but the Gunners ultimately prioritised Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres. A deal for the Swedish striker is understood to be close, valued at €63.5m (£54.8m) plus €10m in add-ons.

Despite the shift in Arsenal’s interest, Šeško remains a highly regarded talent. He signed a new contract with RB Leipzig in June 2024, extending his stay until 2029. While the previous deal contained a release clause of around €65 million (£55.3m), the new terms are believed to include a gentleman’s agreement allowing Šeško to leave should the right opportunity arise.

A former Red Bull Salzburg player, Šeško enjoyed a standout 2024–25 campaign with Leipzig, netting 21 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions. His blend of pace, power, and finishing ability has made him one of Europe’s most coveted young strikers.

Should Isak move on, Newcastle will face a race against time and budget constraints to secure a suitable replacement. While Šeško fits the profile, prising him away from Leipzig could prove a tough task in a competitive market.
