Newcastle consider Leipzig forward as Isak replacement | OneFootball

Newcastle United have shortlisted Lois Openda as a potential option if Alexander Isak leaves the club this summer.

Isak has informed Newcastle of his desire to explore a transfer. The Sweden international has not joined the Magpies for their pre-season tour of Asia, amid interest from Liverpool and the Saudi Pro League.

Newcastle have insisted that Isak is not for sale, though the player’s desire for a move could change their stance.

Eddie Howe will target two strikers in the event that Isak leaves, following Callum Wilson’s exit earlier in the summer.

In addition to the club’s pursuit of Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, journalist Ben Jacobs is reporting that Leipzig’s Openda is on the club’s radar. Newcastle are also preparing a second offer of over £30m for Wissa, having seen a £25m bid rejected.

An approach for Openda could follow. The Belgium international has scored 41 goals in 89 games for the German side since joining from Lens in 2023.

Openda does not have a release clause at Leipzig but significant offers could be considered, after the Bundesliga side missed out on Europe.
