We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 3 Ipswich 0.

The result we wanted, without, perhaps, the performance we wanted.

Some of that was down to Ipswich, who frustrated Newcastle. Firstly by playing some decent football, then by timewasting (even at 2-0 down!) and fouling anyone in black and white.

Finally, they packed their box, and invited Newcastle to thread their way through a blue wall. They showed zero ambition after the first 20 minutes and gave up altogether after their red card. I like Ipswich as a club but their team is poor.

I thought the referee had an abysmal first half and I even have some sympathy for the Ipswich lad who was sent off. I thought the second yellow was harsh but Ipswich were sly, dirty and dishonest, and the ref – Johnson’s first yellow aside – missed nearly everything.

But no matter – it was a fairly comfortable win in the end, and Newcastle were the dominant side.

We’re back up to third and still in contention for the Champions League. We’ll need to play better than this against the teams we still have to face but I’m sure we will.

There were no real stars today but everyone put in a good shift.

Highlights for me included seeing Svan Botman back – straight into beast mode – and William Osula getting his first Premier League goal.

Nick Pope – 7

Hard to give a mark, as I don’t think he had a single save to make.

He did have to deal with a couple of crosses, but to be honest, any of our keepers could have played today without affecting the scoreline.

Pope’s colleagues seem to have solved the problem with his distribution by avoiding passing back to him altogether!

Kieran Trippier – 9

I would say Tripps is back to his best and playing like he’s the team’s captain.

He directed a lot of our play today, much of it on the fringes of Ipswich’s box, and he got two assists.

Player of the Match in my humble opinion.

Fabian Schar – 7

Ipswich’s 4-4-2 set-up put Fab under pressure for the first 20 minutes, but once Newcastle got a bit of control, he settled down.

He could have popped to the shops in the second half for all the threat Ipswich posed.

Dan Burn – 8

A decent game capped by an excellent goal.

Another one who had a little pressure to deal with early doors, but after that, he seemed to enjoy himself.

Tino Livramento – 8

What a season Tino is having and he seems to have saved the best until last.

He was sensational in the final (I was worried he’d be a weak link) and he’s been excellent since.

He was always good in attack, but now he’s comfortable in defence too, it’ll take some player to do him for pace.

Bruno Guimaraes – 8

Lacked a bit of composure in the first half, but once he found his range, he was good.

I liked his second half display – with Ipswich packing their penalty area, he did more than most to try and break them down.

Sandro Tonali – 8

Another one who took 20 minutes or so to get up to speed, but once he did, he was as accomplished as ever.

Played as almost a third centre back when Ipswich looked like posing a threat, then just ran the midfield.

Neat and tidy rather than spectacular today but that was more than enough.

Joe Willock – 7

His first start in a while and he struggled a bit in the first half.

He seemed to want to occupy the same space that Tino and Barnes were looking to exploit and looked lost for a while.

A much better second half. Showed purpose and endeavour.

Jacob Murphy – 8

He must have put 12 decent crosses into the Ipswich box and on another day would have had a handful of assists.

Was always available, he and Tripps have established a very good partnership down our right-hand side.

Won our penalty and had a good game.

Alexander Isak – 7

Strikers are like boxers sometimes. They can lose 10 rounds, swing and miss time after time, then deliver a knockout blow and win the fight. That was Isak today.

He missed a couple of gilt-edged chances but put his penalty away to effectively settle the contest.

There was no way back for our opponents once he struck.

Harvey Barnes – 7

A decent performance but Barnes found it hard to navigate his way through the massed ranks of the Ipswich defence.

He did get a couple of decent crosses in and was his usual hard-working self.

Lewis Miley – 6

I’d like to see Lewis given more game time, because on the few occasions I’ve seen him this season, he has looked very good.

Composed, confident, and much tougher than I thought. He looked right at home when he came on today.

Anthony Gordon – 6

By the time AG entered the fray, Ipswich were sat so deep there was no space for our man to attack, so he had to cut inside. He did that and got a couple of decent attempts off. Good to see him back.

William Osula – 7

I like this lad, he’s a bit of a wildcard, but that is not a bad thing.

Put himself about on the right wing – where he shone at Birmingham in the FA Cup – and scored a lovely header.

I’m chuffed for the lad – he’s definitely worth more game time over the run-in.

Callum Wilson – 6

He’s looked sluggish in the last few games we’ve seen him in but looked a bit sharper today.

If this is a sign he’s coming into form, it’s perfect timing.

Sven Botman – N/A (Not on long enough to judge)

I’m tempted to give him a good mark. He looked like he’d never been away.

It’s just so good to have him back. A quality player.
