Coventry City are hoping to be in the mix for promotion to the Premier League next season
Neil Warnock has warned Coventry City and Frank Lampard that the promotion battle will be very tight this season.
The Sky Blues are aiming to get into the mix for a top two spot in the upcoming campaign after they reached the play-offs last May.
Lampard took charge of the club back in November last year, and oversaw their rise to fifth in the Championship table.
However, defeat to Sunderland in the play-off final led to Coventry remaining in the Championship for another year, with their sights set on a long-awaited top flight return.
Warnock believes that it will be very tight at the top of the Championship this season, citing clubs like Leicester as a huge threat to the Sky Blues.
The 76-year-old has claimed that it won’t be easy for any club to earn a top two place in the division this year, with Leeds United and Burnley both reaching the 100-point mark in the previous term.
“It’s hard for Coventry when you look at the other teams,” said Warnock, via Talksport’s YouTube channel.
“Leicester coming down, they’ve got to try and come back up, don’t they?
“I don’t think it’ll be simple for anybody, I do think it’s genuinely wide open this year.”
Coventry will face Hull City on the opening weekend of the campaign in a 12.30pm kick-off on 9 August.
Coventry have completed three signings so far this summer ahead of the new Championship campaign.
Kaine Kesler-Hayden has made the switch from Aston Villa to bolster the team’s defensive options.
Meanwhile, Miguel Ángel Brau has been signed as a free agent after departing Granada.
Lampard has also overseen the arrival of Carl Rushworth on loan from Brighton to provide some extra competition for game time between the sticks.
Coventry have made slow starts in recent seasons, and they cannot afford that now under Lampard.
Their second half of the campaign was very promising, and showed the potential this squad has if they can put everything together more consistently.
Their summer business has been encouraging, with the club doing a good job keeping the squad together, while bringing in some fresh faces to add competition and provide some depth.
But they will face a lot of competition in the race for a top six finish, with clubs like Middlesbrough, Norwich City and West Brom all likely to improve on last season, along with the recently-relegated sides aiming to go straight back up again.
