Napoli haven’t won in five matches, but the late goal by Philip Billing prevented Inter from pulling away in the standings and boosted the morale of the Partenopei, which will hope to find the best version of Romelu Lukaku in the coming rounds.
Per Il Mattino, the striker hasn’t scored in five matches. It’s not a coincidence that the team hasn’t been successful during such a stretch. The Belgian forward had a somewhat good performance against his former team but once again failed to make the stat sheet.
Lukaku last hit the net on January 25th, when Napoli downed Juventus partially thanks to his PK. He has often come up clutch, finding the target versus Milan, Atalanta, and Roma. His contribution has been sorely missed during the ongoing skid.
The center-forward is up to nine goals and seven assists in the campaign. The Azzurri paid €30M to acquire him from Chelsea last summer after consecutive loan spells at Inter and Roma.
He hasn’t been bad and, even when he’s not producing, he’s a massive hub for their offense, especially after the departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and even more so with David Neres currently hurt. Still, the investment and his salary were substantial for a player of his age. If Antonio Conte wished for the marksman to return to his elite Inter levels, he mustn’t be delighted with his campaign, but time passes for everybody. At least he’s been okay in big matches, which wasn’t the case at Roma last season. A real alternative wouldn’t have hurt.
