Former Roma boss Jose Mourinho found himself once more at the end of elimination from Europa League following a penalty shoot-out.
The current Fenerbahce boss saw his side fall against Rangers last night and, consequently, bow out of the competition.
After the match, the Special One reference the infamous Europa League final in Budapest and his subsequent suspension.
“We were the best team on the pitch,” Mourinho told reporters after the loss to Rangers.
“We deserved to win after 90 minutes and after 120. In the first game I was honest and said we deserved to lose, but tonight we were the best team on the pitch.”
“The referee and VAR decided that we should have gone to penalties, because there were at least 3 penalties in the 120 minutes. We missed 3 in the penalty shootout and Rangers went ahead.”
“Obviously we are sad because we wanted to try to reach the final, but I am very proud of my boys,” he continued.
“I only hope that everything that has happened to my team in European competitions is not a consequence of the Budapest final. I hope it was a random thing. Since that final and my suspension, the things that have happened to us are strange.”
“We are not in the Champions League because in the 118th minute they gave a penalty that only VAR saw, we did not win against Manchester United because they did not give us a penalty that everyone saw.”
“Today there was a guy at VAR who is considered one of the best and yet he didn’t see 3 penalties. I paid my dues with the suspension and I hope that all this is over and that it’s just bad luck.”
