In recent times, recently promoted sides have had joy at the Vélodrome by playing a low-block and frustrating Olympique de Marseille. For SCO Angers, it earned them a draw, whilst earlier this month, AJ Auxerre took all three points away from Marseille after netting three times without reply in the first half.

The two sides, promoted from Ligue 2 this season, have somewhat set a blueprint for playing in what AS Monaco manager Adi Hütter has described as “the best atmosphere in Ligue 1” ahead of the Principality club’s visit to the stadium this Sunday.

“In terms of away atmospheres, it is the biggest in Ligue 1 and it is also a rivalry and a big game […] I’m looking forward to this big clash between two of the best teams in Ligue 1,” said Hütter in a press conference, attended by Get French Football News.

However, there is no question of Monaco following the examples set by Auxerre and Angers. “Auxerre and Angers did really well there, with quick transitions. When you’re promoted, you don’t play a big offensive style and you play more compact and try [to hurt them] in transition and on set pieces. Our style is different and it is one that we trust and believe in. We have to be strong in this game, and stable and compact in both directions,” said Hütter.
