Ruthless Philadelphia Union brush aside Atlanta United

Scorers: Carranza 18′, Uhre 45+3′, Gazdag 68′, Harriel 90+6′; Gutman 25′

Philadelphia Union took another step towards the playoffs, thrashing Atlanta United 4-1.

Philadelphia struck first as Mikael Uhre brushed off a couple of defenders before laying the ball into the path of Julián Carranza. The 22-year-old took one touch before firing a low shot into the bottom corner from the top of the box.

The lead, however, only lasted seven minutes. André Blake was on hand to save Thiago Almada’s effort but Andrew Gutman bravely dove in to head the visitors level.

Having made one already, Uhre found his way onto the scoresheet in the first-half stoppage time. Unmarked at the back post, the Danish forward was on hand to lash home from a corner kick.

Dániel Gazdag extended Philadelphia’s lead with 20-minutes remaining as the Hungarian scored his 17th goal of the season, tapping home a loose ball in the six-yard area.

Nathan Harriel completed the ruthless rout deep into stoppage time, pocking home a loose ball in the box to make it 4-1.

Scorers: Jiménez 62′, Bernardeschi 82′; Costa 24′, Puig 89′

Federico Bernardeschi’s late penalty was cancelled out by a Riqui Puig stunner as spoils are shared in Toronto.

Toronto FC came close early into the encounter as their Italian duo combined. Lorenzo Insigne cut in from the left to deliver a wicked ball at the back post but Federico Bernardeschi couldn’t control his header as it sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Made to rue their miss, it was the visitors who struck first. Brazilian winger Douglas Costa produced a moment of magic as he curled in a wonderful free-kick from just outside of the penalty area.

The hosts drew level soon after the hour mark as Ifunanyachi Achara found an unmarked Jesús Jiménez who, having just come off the bench, stroked home his first MLS goal since June.

Lorenzo Insigne was brought down inside the box with under 10-minutes remaining and his Italian compatriot stepped up and slipped but still managed to fire Toronto ahead.

Just as Toronto thought they had done enough, it was LA Galaxy’s Spanish star who changed the script. Riqui Puig played a quick one-two before unleashing a devastating effort into the top corner to draw the game level at 2-2 with his first MLS goal.

Scorers: Morgan 43′

Lone Lewis Morgan goal was enough for New York Red Bulls as they close the gap with CF Montréal.

The visitors took the lead on the stroke of half-time as following a brilliant turn in midfield by Cristian Casseres, Morgan was put in behind the Montréal defence.

Keeping his composure the 25-year-old cooly lifted the ball over the onrushing James Pantemis to put New York RBs ahead at the break.

Montreéal dominated possession throughout the second period but were unable to find the equalising goal as the New York Red Bulls move within a point of the Canadian side.

D.C. United pick up vital three points away to NYCFC

Scorers: Héber 27′; Kamara 23′, Birnbaum 67′

Birnbaum’s second-half strike was enough to give Wayne Rooney’s side a win in New York

D.C. United came flying out of the blocks as Chris Durkin was found unmarked in the box but the midfielder could only direct his shot straight as Sean Johnson.

Durkin would find redemption just minutes later though as after running the byline the 22-year-old squared the ball to Ola Kamara, unmarked in the six-yard area, to tap home.

The lead, however, didn’t last long as Héber finished off a slick team move although a heavy deflection left keeper David Ochao with little chance.

A devastating error by Johnson gifted D.C. United the lead. Coming in unmarked at the back post Steven Birnbaum met Martín Rodriguez’s free-kick with a powerful header but the NYCFC keeper got a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.
