MLS Midway: Top Performers

Immagine dell'articolo:MLS Midway: Top Performers

We’re halfway through the season, a perfect time to check in on our top players across position and situation.

Top Performers: Attack

It’s the same criteria as before: goals, penalties taken, big chances missed & goal conversion %.  Notable: there are seven players sitting on 8 goals, including many who dropped since week 14. The biggest jump here is Lionel Messi, who went from off the charts to number four. With two games in hand, expect Messi to notch some more once he returns from the FIFA Club World Cup.

Top Attackers: sorted by goals scored

Tai Baribo continues to reign supreme, with an eye-popping 42% goal conversion. Joining him in the rare air of +40% conversion and fewest big chances missed in NY Red Bulls’ Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who climbs to sixth. Christan Arango and Martín Ojeda remain on the list but have stalled the past five weeks. A new arrival is Sporting Kansas City’s Dejan Joveljić (it feels weird to type that).

Special: Top Goalscorer (No Penalties)

I like the purity of this statistic, so it’s back for a second time. Here’s your top 10:

  • Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) – 10 *NEW*
  • Hannes Wolf (NYCFC) – 8 *NEW*
  • Tani Oluwaseyi (Minnesota United FC) – 8
  • Evander (Cincinnati FC) – 7
  • Philip Zinkernagel (Chicago Fire) – 7 *NEW*
  • Josef Martínez (San Jose Earthquakes) – 7
  • Marco Pašalić (Orlando City FC) – 7
  • Antony Alves (Portland Timbers) – 6 *NEW*
  • Tadeo Allende (Inter Miami) – 6 *NEW*
  • Eleven other players with 5 goals.

Whiffmasters

Yeah, it’s back baby. The worst of the best.

Top Performers: Defense

The variables: tackles, accurate pass %, clean sheets, penalties committed. Only defenders and midfielders are considered.

Top Defenders, sorted by tackles

I want to call out three players here: David Ayala (#3 Portland Timbers), Cristian Roldán (#7, Seattle Sounders) and Mamadou Fofana (#10, New England Revolution). All three have high tackle numbers and insanely high accurate pass %. Fofana does have a knack for committing penalties, however.

Same criteria as the Attackers, but with Defenders

Big props to Ilay Feingold of the Revs, who jumped into second place after getting at least two goals in the past five weeks.

Top Performers: Goalkeepers

Top Keepers, sorted by saves

Carlos Coronel’s climb from #5 to #1 accompanied a three-game winning streak for the Red Bulls. He also sits in a four-way tie with seven clean sheets. The top clean sheet leaders are below:
