Milan manager Paulo Fonseca addressed the press ahead of his side’s Champions League clash versus Real Madrid.
Speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, Paulo Fonseca began the session by sympathising with the people of Valencia as the region suffered flash floods caused by storm DANA recently. He said: “It’s hard to see what has happened, our thoughts are with the people who have suffered at this tragic time. In Italy, we’ve been through a similar situation, although not comparable. We are with the people of Valencia.” UEFA have urged teams to maintain a minute silence before their respective Champions League kickoffs for the people of Valencia.
Fonseca moved on to demanding respect for the opposition tonight, Real Madrid, as he views this clash as an opportunity for his side to prevail on the biggest stage. He commented: “Games like this are faced with great motivation, it’s a great opportunity. Real Madrid are the main contenders for winning the Champions League. For us, it’s an opportunity to show our worth, facing the best players without fear, with courage, because we believe we can play a good game.”
The Portuguese coach confirmed the selection of Rafael Leao in the starting line-up after benching him for a couple of games in the Serie A. Leao has not found form this season and he disappointed after coming off the bench in the Rossoneri’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli. Fonseca might not start with Alvaro Morata tonight as he cited a potential injury for him as this will be a high-profile contest. He said: “Rafa will start up front. We expect from him what we normally expect, that he can be decisive. Álvaro is very important to me, not just as a player but as a professional. He’s very intelligent and he’s doing very well, he’s essential for our team. He needs to play and what he does for the team is decisive. Playing here is special for him, but I hope to have the same Álvaro we’ve had all season. He’s been working hard for the team with a lot of energy.”
