Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso singled out Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine as the decisive figure in his team’s elimination from the MTN8 competition.

The semifinal concluded with a 1–1 draw at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, ultimately being decided by a penalty shootout. Chaine emerged as the match-winner after making two critical saves during the spot-kicks.

Cardoso acknowledged the outcome gracefully, emphasizing the impact of the Pirates’ goalkeeper. He described both legs of the semifinal as closely contested but conceded that Orlando Pirates demonstrated greater composure in the decisive moments.

“We were aware of the risks, and in the end, it came down to penalties,” stated Cardoso. “Their goalkeeper was exceptional—that was the difference. It was a very even match, and a 1–1 result felt fair.”

He added, “The first leg was similarly balanced, also finishing 1–1. They executed better in the shootout. Credit to Orlando Pirates—they deserve congratulations.”
