A fresh report claims that Boro have strengthened Rob Edwards’ attacking options.
Middlesbrough have reportedly made a move for Lausanne-Sport striker Kaly Sene.
Boro are still hoping to conclude some final pieces of business before the summer transfer window slams shut on 1 September.
The Teessiders have made some eye-catching additions to Rob Edwards' squad this summer, with Adilson Malanda, Sverre Nypan, Sontje Hansen and Callum Brittain some of the new faces at the Riverside Stadium.
However, it remains no secret that Edwards is desperate to add another forward to his attacking options before the window closes, and reports emerging on Saturday may suggest he's closing in on getting one through the door.
According to reputable Boro news outlet Boropolis via X on Saturday, Middlesbrough are said to have made an approach for Lausanne-Sport striker Kaly Sene.
A further report from The Northern Echo has gone a step further, claiming that Boro are indeed in 'advanced talks' to sign the centre-forward.
The 24-year-old has been in good form for the Swiss side since signing for Lausanne in the summer of 2023 from Basel, and may now have earned himself a move to the Championship.
It would come as a big boost to Edwards, who could use a better range of striking options to choose from.
Boropolis stop short of revealing any details of the approach or whether an official bid has been launched, but clearly suggest that a bid has been launched for the Senegalese forward.
The 24-year-old has taken in spells with Juventus’ youth ranks, Basel, Grasshoppers and Omonia Nicosia respectively before joining Lausanne.
He has been tipped by outlets like Foot Africa to be one of Senegal’s next stars, with debates already raging about when he might be included in an upcoming squad.
His current deal with Lausanne is said to run until next summer.
It has taken some time for Sene to kick on, but that’s exactly what he’s managed with Lausanne.
He netted 12 goals and three assists in all competitions in 2023/24, before adding another 12 direct goal contributions to his CV last term - as per FotMob.
The new campaign has arguably started even stronger for the Senegalese striker, netting three goals in the opening three league games of the season, whilst adding another three in UEFA Conference League Qualifiers against Vardar and Astana respectively.
With stats like those, he is bound to attract attention from one of Europe’s bigger leagues, and it looks like Middlesbrough are trying to ensure they come first in the race.
Boro are not without options upfront, chief among those being Tommy Conway, signed from Bristol City last season for a reported fee of £4.5m.
Added to that are Marcus Forss and Sonny Finch, but the latter is still a young prospect at 20 years old, who hasn’t made a league appearance for Boro since the 2023/24 season.
Even one injury, especially one to Conway, would leave the North East side looking extremely short in central attacking options, so the space for Sene in the squad is clear.
Conway’s presence may even be a positive for Sene, as moving from the Swiss league to the Championship is likely to represent a significant step-up, both in quality and physicality, and an adjustment period may be required.
Having Conway to rely on for goals would take significant pressure off Sene, and allow him time to settle into his new surroundings and gradually build up his minutes and confidence.
His contributions for Lausanne over the past couple of years show that he has the raw attributes and natural instincts of a striker, meaning there is every chance Edwards and his team can work to develop the striker into a Championship competitor.
Having enjoyed huge success with the signing, development and subsequent big-money sale of Emmanuel Latte Lath - who despite being signed from Atalanta, spent the season on loan in Swiss football prior to signing for Boro - they will be confident they can do so yet again with Sene.
They must first, however, get a deal over the line, and with Sene’s currently unstoppable goalscoring form in 2025/26, they may want to move quickly to avoid disappointment.
