Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen has said if he were in Arne Slot’s position he would try and sign Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez arrived at Chelsea for a then British record from Portuguese side Benfica in January 2023 and made an immediate impact in Graham Potter’s struggling side off the back of winning the World Cup.
The 23-year-old struggled last season under Mauricio Pochettino and it subsequently transpired he had been playing through a hernia issue for the majority of the campaign.
Fernandez won the Copa America with Argentina in the summer, but was embroiled in a racism incident in the aftermath, which Chelsea dealt with internally.
The midfielder was named as part of the leadership group and has captained the side on a number of occasions in the absence of Reece James.
Fernandez had a mixed start to the season and it culminated in him losing his place to Romeo Lavia for the trip to Liverpool in October and he spent four games on the bench before returning to the starting line-up.

Enzo Maresca restored Fernandez to the team after the November international break against Leicester and he’s been in superb form, starting every league game since.
The Argentina international has three goals and three assists in his last five league games and Glen Johnson believes he’s in the best form since he joined the club.
Maresca highlighted earlier this month where he believes Fernandez has improved a lot and Owen named the Argentine as the player he would sign if he were in Slot’s position at Liverpool.
“I really like Enzo Fernandez. I think he is brilliant, I really like him,” he told ESPN Argentina as cited on X.com.

“He is a world class player. If I were Liverpool manager and had to sign an Argentine player, I think I would choose him.”
Fernandez was rested on Thursday night as Chelsea beat Shamrock Rovers 5-1 in the Conference League, but he will almost certainly return to the starting line-up against Everton on Sunday.
