McKennie admits his Juventus future is uncertain and players are ‘exhausted’ | OneFootball

Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie doesn’t guarantee that he will sign a contract extension and admits he and his teammates are ‘exhausted’ so results have been worse in the second part of the season.

USMNT international McKennie spoke to DAZN after a 1-1 draw between Juventus and Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

“To be honest, it was a little more fun today. It was a lot of hard work. I think we are all working for each other, and whenever you have a team that works together, it makes it more fun,” he said.

“Obviously, we had some chances that we didn’t score, but overall, the performance was better than the last couple of games that we’ve played.

McKennie admits Juventus players are ‘exhausted’

“We need a win. We haven’t won an away game in a little bit, and hopefully, the next game will be three points instead of one, and we can look forward to the Coppa Italia Final.”

McKennie listened to questions in Italian and replied in English, but ex-Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni did ask his question in English. What was the main difference between the first and the second part of the season for Juventus?

“First of all, thanks for asking in English,” McKennie replied smiling.

“For any team out there towards the end of the season, players are a little bit more tired, more mentally exhausted. We don’t play for granted that we play for such an amazing club but I think maybe at the beginning of the season you see everyone fighting and go to the last battle. Everyone was fighting for each other. Now it’s a bit more difficult because, at the end of the season, everyone’s more tired and more exhausted, but we still want to fight for each other and win games. We’ve been a bit unlucky in certain situations too.”

McKennie’s contract with Juventus expires in June 2025, and multiple sources claim the Bianconeri will put him on the market if he does not sign a new deal.

“I have a year left in my contract, and my agent is speaking with the director. I’d like to stay, obviously, but we’ll see what happens. Hopefully, we can work it out,” said the ex-Leeds loanee.

“As for the team, we have the same goal we’ve had for the past three years. We want to win the Scudetto and play a big role in the Champions League; we want to return Juventus to the glory days, how it was before. Juventus are a team with a lot of winning history, and this team wants to show that we belong in that history as well, so hopefully, we can win the Coppa Italia, at least a trophy this season and finish the season strong and for the future put Juventus where we belong.”

McKennie has provided seven assists in 33 Serie A matches this season. He returned to Turin last summer after a six-month loan at Leeds United.

Overall, McKennie has made 132 appearances with the Bianconeri, scoring 13 goals.
