The world has grown accustomed to high-octane, thrilling second-leg fixtures between Real Madrid and Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League in recent years.

Last night’s game, however, was anything but that and one was forced to ask the question if the visitors were even looking for a win at Santiago Bernabeu.

Pep Guardiola and his men looked deflated from the get-go and had no plan or intent to win. They aimlessly passed the ball from side to side and took the beating from the men in white with even the manager not looking to push his men forward.

In fact, Pep benched his two most decisive players for the all-important second leg last night – Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, and the 3-1 win for Los Blancos was thus largely uncontested.

With the whopping 6-3 win on aggregate over the Premier League giants, Carlo Ancelotti and Co. have now secured a place in the Round of 16 of the competition.

Madrid Universal brings you the player ratings from Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester City.

Thibaut Courtois: 6

The goalkeeper had no role in the first half as Manchester City did not force him into a single save in any capacity. Was good with his distribution which was all that he had to execute.

Had only two straightforward saves to make after the break. Not much he could do about the late Manchester City goal.

Ferland Mendy: 7

The left-back was untested by Pep Guardiola’s side in the opening half and did not have to make any defensive interceptions as Real Madrid carried the momentum largely by themselves.

He did not push forward in attack with the left flank already having a dominating figure in Vinicius and was solid at the back.

Antonio Rudiger: 7.5

The German centre-back returned to the starting lineup after coming back from injury and had a decent outing in terms of both distribution and defensive contributions.

Yet, it was a relatively quiet afternoon for the veteran as he has seen games with far more defensive responsibility than Pep’s subdued team last night.

Raul Asencio: 8

The youngster was Real Madrid’s best defender on the night as he continued his impressive run of form.

Asencio racked up the assist for Kylian Mbappe’s opening goal in the fourth minute at Santiago Bernabeu and followed it up with a passionate defensive show where he celebrated every tackle like a goal. Top mentality.

Federico Valverde: 7.5

The Uruguayan star served as Real Madrid’s captain last night and once again started as a right-back for Los Blancos with other options out injured.

Did well to fill in as a replacement out of his natural position and did not do anything extraordinary to stand out.

Was his usual relentless self off the ball and calm and composed in possession.

Aurelien Tchouameni: 8

Back into his niche in the defensive midfield, Tchouameni enjoyed his football once more and showed his quality as a pivot player last night.

Was reliable and solid in the middle of the park, winning his duels and recovering possession when Los Blancos were chasing after the ball.

Was close to flawless with his distribution and occasionally attempted the ambitious ball forward to cut through the lines.

Dani Ceballos: 7.5

A good showing from the Spanish midfielder who did well after being given a start in the UEFA Champions League.

Was regularly involved in the buildup, smooth with his decision making and aided Tchouameni as part of the pivot when needed as well.

Jude Bellingham: 8.5

A routine high-quality performance from the English attacking midfielder who was impressive with his decision-making and vertical brand of passing.

Was always alert to push forward in numbers but also formed a key member of the midfield in terms of defensive contributions.

Rodrygo: 9

The young Brazilian star had a very unique and peculiar first-half which just goes to show his quality on the ball and how dangerous he can be in possession.

In the opening 45 minutes, Rodrygo had just 10 passes and 25 touches of which he completed all ten.

Of them, however, he converted three into key passes and one into an assist for Mbappe’s second goal. Was equally, if not more decisive after the break.

Vinicius Jr: 8

A relatively silent night for the Real Madrid talisman who continues his struggle for form and decisive contributions in the final third.

Came up with some interesting dribbles in attack and looked sharp on the ball but simply lacked the final ball or finishing touch to rack up the numbers.

Kylian Mbappe: 10

The Frenchman is in the form of his life and simply cannot stop scoring for Real Madrid and continued the same run of form against Manchester City last night.

He opened the scoring on the night in just the fourth minute with an audacious finish off an Asencio assist to virtually put the game to bed just when it started.

He then followed it up with another important goal in the first period to make it 5-2 and bury the result beyond any doubt with another efficient finish.

Completed his hat-trick with a stunning finish past Ederson from distance.
