Crew fans can begin holding their breath again, because the possibility of the club selling Max Arfsten is still very real. Reports say French side Toulouse of Ligue 1 has upped the ante for the 24-year-old wingback.
After coming in with a lowball offer in early June, Toulouse seemed to back off after Arfsten was named to the USMNT roster for the Gold Cup. But according to a social media post by soccer reporter Favian Renkel, the Crew recently rejected a new offer of just over $2 million. That’s still far below Arfsten’s estimated value of nearly $3 million by Transfermkt. But that valuation is from early June, before he started each game for a USMNT that went all the way to the Gold Cup final. If Toulouse really wants the first-time MLS all-star, they’re probably going to have to come in with an offer between $3-$3.5 million.
My advice to Crew fans is to breathe because, sooner or later, I think the guy with everyone’s favorite hair style is going to be moving on. The consensus is if Arfsten wants to continue to be considered a viable USMNT candidate, he needs to be playing in one of the better European leagues. While some were very critical of his play in the Gold Cup, he flashed enough to show his potential at the international level. Remember, two years ago he was a virtual unknown. His rise to USMNT starter and MLS all-star can only be described as meteoric. There is still room for improvement and, unfortunately for us Crew fans, the best place for Arfsten to develop is in Europe.
If a deal isn’t struck during this summer transfer window, I’ll be very surprised if Arfsten is in a Crew uniform for the start of the 2027 season. Whether it’s Toulouse or someone else, I think an offer that satisfies the Crew will be made in the January window.
