Coupe de France, Semi-final, 02/04/25
AS Cannes’ fairytale run in the Coupe de France came to an end at the hands of Stade de Reims (1-2), who set up a final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Cannes have punched above their weight this season but they were yet to face a Ligue 1 side. On paper, there is a gulf between these sides but it didn’t play out that way on paper in the first half. Chafik Abbas set the tone for Cannes early on, cutting inside and dragging a shot just wide. There was intent, plenty of it but maybe not the quality to make it count.
Instead, it was Les Stadistes, in the first clear-cut chance of the game, that got the first goal. Mamadou Diakhon latched onto a clearance, beat his man, got to the byline and then pulled back for Ibrahim Hafiz to tap home from close range. Reims were relatively happy to allow Cannes to have the ball; they are a side, after all, that has been accustomed to seeing little of the ball in Ligue 1 this season.
Their best chances came in transition and it was from a Cannes corner that they worked their next chance with Keito Nakamura dragging wide. Valentin Atangana then had a glorious chance to give the visitors some breathing room but then too dragged wide on the swivel with just Fabio Vanni to beat.
Les Cannois continued to push in the second; Reims continued to be pragmatic and look to stay compact and hit on the break. That didn’t change even when Cheikh Ndoye headed home an equaliser from a corner just seven minutes into the second half.
But caught up in the euphoria of the leveller, the fourth-tier side conceded again. It was a terrible goal to concede and can only be explained a lapse in concentration as Teddy Teuma was left all alone at the penalty spot to stroke home the simplest of cutbacks.
Cannes almost levelled once more but Yehvann Diouf excellently denied the Coupe de France’s top scorer, Julien Domingues, whose close-range header looked destined for the back of the net. But Reims had plenty of chances too, the best of which fell to Oumar Diakité, who was put in one-on-one. He beat Fabio Vanni but his shot dribbled agonisingly wide.
Dassiemou Mai also went close with a shot across goal in the first minute of stoppage time but Cannes could not find the goal to take the game to stoppage time. Reims will therefore face PSG at the Stade de France on May 24th.
