Mascherano on Messi's Fitness: ''He played our last 15 matches...'' | OneFootball

Inter Miami CF manager Javier Mascherano spoke about Lionel Messi's fitness ahead of the the Club World Cup opener.

"Messi is recovering well," the Argentinian said about his former Barça team mate. "There were perhaps some moments when we had to do without him due to some discomfort, but he played our last 15 matches. Except against Dallas, when we rested everyone as we were playing the second semi-final of the Champions League. He played the rest of the games, no problem. We were fortunate that he rested in one of the two matches for the Argentina national team."

"We have the highest expectations for Leo. As we always say, we are trying to help him, trying to create an environment around him, an environment in which he feels comfortable and can do what we are used to."

Mascherano also talked about potential future signings. "We have been talking for almost two months about the clear need to strengthen our squad, not just because of the current situation we face due to injuries, but also because we decided to do it as part of our planning."

"I would have liked to have signed players, of course, especially considering this type of competition. We are possibly in the most important competition in the history of our club."

Inter Miami will kick-off the Club World Cup later today (or Sunday morning GMT time) against Egyptian side Al-Ahly.
