Manchester United Women’s goalkeeper Mary Earps has claimed it is up to the club to match her ambitions if she is to sign a new contract at the club.

The England international’s future has been one of the most discussed issues at United as she is out of contract this summer, despite being the biggest star at the club.

The keeper has been in incredible form in the last two years as she has saved United and England on many occasions and has been crowned the best goalkeeper in the world by FIFA in the last two seasons.

Speaking to Sky Sports about her future she claimed, “I think, the honest reality is, conversations are still ongoing.”

“I have been clear that I don’t want to make an emotional decision”.

Earps clarified that the most important factor for her to consider was what the club is planning to do to catch up with their rivals.

United fans were revelling in joy a couple of weekends ago when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in the FA Cup final but were brought back down to earth with a bang when they were destroyed 0-6 at home to champions Chelsea on Saturday.

The Red Devils finished fifth in the league and a huge 20 points behind Chelsea in the Women’s Super League table, highlighting how much work there is to be done to catch up with the best in the country.

Elaborating on the issue she said, “I have asked the club for some confirmation on what they’re trying to achieve and when it happens, I’ll be able to make a decision, so it’s kind of up to the club.”

The 31 year old also highlighted how difficult her start to the season was as she stated, “at the beginning of the season it was really tough. I felt really upset about things that were being said about me and that came out. They weren’t true but I have tried to keep my head down and work hard. I think I have been a punching bag at times.”

The England international also opened up on the disappointment of the season that has just finished but hopes the fans can stay positive due to the cup win.

“There’s no hiding from the fact that our league campaign has been disappointing. The feelings [about Sunday’s loss] and emotions are still very much lingering there and I am trying to not let it overshadow the success of the FA Cup. We fell short this year, I don’t think the table lies.”

Earps’ decision will drastically shape the mood of the whole summer for the Women’s team. Losing a world-class player like her would be a body blow to the side’s ambitions.

However, were they able to retain her, the cup success and a strong summer window could really see a much better season next year and keep fans spirits up about the future prospects of the team.
