Marseille were back in the Champions League draw for the first time since 2022, when Igor Tudor’s side crashed out of the group stage after a painful last-minute home defeat to Tottenham, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scoring the winner. The Dane is now a Marseillais, but he won’t reunite with his former Spurs teammates. However, Roberto De Zerbi’s Phocéens will host two Premier League sides at the white-hot Vélodrome: Liverpool FC and Newcastle United.
Due to their absence from the continental stage last season, Marseille were drawn in Pot 3. OM, who earned their Champions League spot after finishing second in Ligue 1, will fly out to Belgium twice to face Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge. A trip to Real Madrid’s Santiago-Bernabeu Stadium is also on the cards for the 1993 Champions League winners.
Furthermore, Marseille will host Atalanta BC for a rematch of the 2024 Europa League semi-final, when La Dea eliminated the Ligue 1 side before crushing Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the final courtesy of Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick.
