Maresca hopeful Chelsea star will return to action in their next game | OneFootball

Enzo Maresca says he hopes defender Wesley Fofana will be able to get some minutes in Chelsea’s next game.

Fofana played just 14 times for the Blues last season because of a hamstring problem, which he underwent surgery for.

But he was back on the bench for Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace in their opening Premier League game, and Maresca says he hopes to have him back on the pitch soon.

“Wes was on the bench but was just on the bench to be with us, the plan was not for him to have any minutes,” he said.

“Hopefully for the next one we can start to use him for some minutes.”

Fellow central defender Tosin was left out of the squad because of an injury but Maresca says he is unsure of the severity of the problem.

“He had a physical problem, we don’t know for how long,” he said.

A serious knee injury for Levi Colwill has left Chelsea short of options in the middle of defence, with Maresca stating his desire for the club to bring in another central defender before the transfer window shuts.

But it was at the top end of the pitch where Chelsea struggled against Palace, and Maresca believes his side should have won the game with the chances they created.

“I think, overall, we deserved (to win),” he said.

“We created enough chances between the first half and second half. Apart from the free-kick where the goal was disallowed, I don’t think we conceded chances.”

The Blues’ next game sees them travel to West Ham on Friday night.
