Manchester United’s hunt for a new goalkeeper seems to have taken them to Atalanta, with Marco Carnesecchi the latest name to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.

After the season that Andre Onana had last time out, committing high-profile errors in both the Premier League and in Europe, no wonder Ruben Amorim wants him gone.

The Red Devils have been linked with Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, but given INEOS’ funds crunch, a more cost-effective option could be sought in the end.

The Italian could be available for around €40 million, with the 24-year-old impressing for La Dea as he started 44 games in all competitions.

United interested in Marco Carnesecchi

He helped keep 18 clean-sheets in total, earning praise for his no-nonsense style of goalkeeping and his impressive shot-stopping ability.

In fact, he was called the “best-performing Italian player in Serie A“, high praise indeed, which explains United’s sudden interest.

Sunday’s Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness) have claimed the Atalanta No.1 is “coveted” by United, and he would certainly be an upgrade on the Cameroonian between the sticks.

But his price tag and difficulties when negotiating with Atalanta could play spoilsport. The last time the Old Trafford side sat with the Serie A side, they ended up fleecing the English giants for Rasmus Hojlund.

Deal will be costly

A costly mistake United are still paying for. Whether United actually go after Marco Carnesecchi will depend on the money left over after INEOS have strengthened their priority positions.

If and when Bryan Mbeumo’s deal gets wrapped up, the English giants are likely to target a striker which might end up depleting their whole budget.

Player sales can then ensure a midfielder gets brought in, with reports suggesting a possible loan. Which explains why Onana is confident of staying in Manchester.

If somehow, Saudi Pro League sides actually come in for the Cameroon international, United will definitely jump for a high-quality replacement.

Apart from the No.1 spot, backup keeper Altay Bayindir is also likely to leave with plenty of interest from Turkish clubs in his services.
