Manchester United have confirmed that Luke Shaw (28) has suffered a significant leg injury, which will rule him out “for a few months”.
The injury is a worry for club and country. The defender was withdrawn at halftime during Manchester United’s victory over Luton Town last weekend, and Erik Ten Hag was immediately fearing the worst, stating that it “didn’t look great”. Further tests have confirmed the Dutchman’s suspicions.
In an official statement, Manchester United confirmed that Shaw had suffered a muscular injury, which will leave him out for an “extended period“. The statement added that it is expected that he will miss multiple months, which puts Shaw’s place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad in doubt. Shaw is a regular in the England set-up, having featured 31 times for the Three Lions. The former Southampton full-back was in competition with Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell for a starting spot.
His injury also leaves Ten Hag with a selection headache. With Sergio Reguilon sent back out on loan, this time to Brentford, Tyrell Malacia is the only recognised left-back in the squad, however, it is thought that he is not yet ready to feature as he recovers from injury.
