United could turn their attentions to the Aston Villa striker as Ruben Amorim seeks to improve his attacking options
It has already been a busy summer at Old Trafford as the club look to rebuild under Ruben Amorim after a disappointing season in which they finished 15th in the Premier League and lost in the Europa League final to Tottenham.
A £62.5m deal for Matheus Cunha was finalised last month and the Red Devils are favourites to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.
In addition, a recognised centre-forward is thought to be high on Amorim’s list of priorities in the event that Rasmus Hojlund departs.
The Denmark struggled for consistency last season and has been linked with a return to Italy amid reported interest from Inter Milan.
In terms of targets, United were keen on Liam Delap earlier in the summer but the striker opted to join Chelsea in a £30m deal whilst there is uncertainty surrounding the future of Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swede - also linked with a move to Arsenal - has apparently had a change of heart about joining Man Utd but the Portuguese outfit are determined to get a good price for the prolific striker.
As a result, United could turn their attentions to Watkins. According to the Mirror, initial talks with Villa about signing the England international have been held, though they are not willing to pay the asking price of £60m.
This is because of Watkins’ age, 29, and lack of resale value.
Watkins managed 16 Premier League goals in 38 appearances for Villa last season. He scored once and chipped in with four assists in the Champions League too.
