Manchester United have won just ten Premier League games heading into the final three fixtures of 2024-25 and will now finish in the bottom half of the table in what has been an underwhelming domestic campaign from start to finish.

The Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim has to make some crucial and ruthless decisions in the summer if his first full season in charge of the Old Trafford club is to turn out successfully, and here is a look at which players he should retain and those to be let go.

GOALKEEPERS

Andre Onana

Man United are in the Europa League final after an unbeaten European campaign, but they almost never made it this far because of the Cameroonian.

He has not covered himself in glory since joining the Red Devils from Inter Milan in 2023, with eight errors leading to goal to his name.

Onana may not be the worst goalkeeper in the history of Man United, but they deserve better if they are serious about winning the Premier League title anytime soon, and not many are surprised that they have linked with Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic ahead of the summer transfer window.

Altay Bayindir

A club like Man United need to have one of the best back-up goalies in the game, and the 27-year-old Turkey international is far from being one.

Argentine hero Sergio Romero was trusted enough to take over Cup games during his time at the club, and fans never panicked with him in goal as he proved to be a quality cover for David de Gea.

Bayindir was finally given a chance in the Premier League against Newcastle United last month after Onana was dropped following an uninspiring performance against Lyon in the first-leg of the quarter-finals, but he shipped four goals and is simply not good enough for this team.

He needs to be sold.

Tom Heaton

The 39-year-old may have made just three appearances since re-joining the Red Devils in 2021, but he remains a valuable member of the squad in the training ground and dressing room due to his huge experience.

Heaton has been offered a one-year extension to remain at Man United beyond this summer and deservedly so.

DEFENDERS

Victor Lindelof

The 30-year-old Swede has been a faithful employee since joining Man United from Benfica in 2017, making 281 appearances across those eight campaigns and winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Lindelof is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Red Devils have opted to allow him to leave as Amorim eyes a summer rebuild.

Verdict: Release

Noussair Mazraoui

The Netherlands-born Morocco international has been a solid buy since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2024, playing 53 times and featuring at right-back, left-back, centre-back and midfield.

The 27-year-old signed a four-year deal last August upon his arrival and is currently proving to be good value for money.

Verdict: Keep

Matthijs de Ligt

He arrived in a double deal alongside Mazraoui but has yet to fully impress despite 42 appearances.

De Ligt has had his fair share of fitness battles this season and will hope he can overcome them heading into the new campaign.

The Dutchman has yet to fulfil the huge potential he displayed at Ajax, and the jury is still out on him.

Harry Maguire

The England international centre-back is not slowing down yet at 32, impressing at both ends of the pitch so far this term to establish himself as a key player under Amorim.

Man United triggered the one-year extension option in his contract in January to prevent him from leaving as a free agent at the end of this season, and their executives are now keen for him to have a long-term future at the club beyond his playing days, with talks over a new contract anticipated in the summer.

Lisandro Martinez

Injuries have limited the World Cup winner to 91 appearances since he joined the Old Trafford club from Ajax in 2022, but he is one of their most reliable defenders when fit, and he has convinced detractors and naysayers beyond any reasonable doubt that he is good enough for the English top-flight.

Verdict: Keep

Patrick Dorgu

The 20-year-old has made 16 appearances since joining Man United in February, and while he has looked decent so far, only time will tell if he is the real deal.

Verdict: Undecided

Leny Yoro

The 19-year-old chose the Red Devils ahead of Real Madrid and is proving himself after becoming the most expensive player aged 18 or younger when he was signed from Lille last summer.

The future is bright for the Frenchman given some of his performances so far, and he has the potential to become the best centre-back in the league.

Diogo Dalot

The Portuguese has been decent since arriving from Porto in 2018, and his ability to play at both left-back and right-back has benefited all the Man United managers he has played under.

His return of nine goals and 17 assists in 208 games is not the most impressive, but the 26-year-old Dalot is ever reliable and has room to improve under Amorim.

Luke Shaw

The 29-year-old Englishman has been at Man United since 2014 and is out of contract in 2027, but should the club consider selling him?

While it is no fault of his, the left-back is never fit and has spent most of the last two seasons battling one long-term knock or the other.

Ayden Heaven

It is early days and the 19-year-old has played just four games since joining Man United from Arsenal in February, but his passion speaks volumes and it appears the Red Devils have a quality player on their hands.

Verdict: Keep

Jonny Evans

A faithful servant of the club. The 37-year-old is set to leave at the end of the season once his contract expires, and he will remain a Man United legend after impressing during his second stint by bailing out the club several times.

Verdict: A deserved send-off

Harry Amass

The 18-year-old left-back is starting to prove why Shaw once said people should watch out for him, but whether he can do enough to convince Amorim he deserves regular playing chances next term remains to be seen.

Verdict: Keep or Loan Out

Tyler Fredricson

The 20-year-old needs to play more and opportunities are few and far between at Man United given the centre-back options available in the first-team.

A season-long loan to the Championship next season could come in handy.

MIDFIELDERS

Mason Mount

The Champions League winner reminded everyone of his quality last night, scoring twice in the 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao at Old Trafford, but whether he can stay fit remains unknown.

Could he be another Luke Shaw?

Bruno Fernandes

The Saudis want the Portuguese and are ready to offer him four times his current wages.

Man United are not ready to sell their captain anytime soon, and rightly so, considering his huge influence and consistency in the final third.

Christian Eriksen

The Dane is out of contract at the end of the season and while he could not replicate his Tottenham Hotspur form at Man United, he was a decent free signing who gave his best whenever called upon.

Verdict: Release

Amad Diallo

The Ivory Coast international has been involved in two goals in his last three appearances since returning from a three-month lay-off, and the Red Devils might have had a better domestic campaign had he not missed a large chunk of the season.

Verdict: Keep

Casemiro

Fans have seen a different version of the Brazilian in recent weeks, and it is hard to see the club putting him up for sale again given his recent newfound importance to this team.

Manuel Ugarte

The Uruguayan is having a decent debut campaign at Man United and will hope to get better next season and going forward.

Kobbie Mainoo

Last season was the breakthrough campaign for the 20-year-old, but he has found himself out of favour recently and has been linked with a potential exit, with the Red Devils desperate to fall into line with the profit and sustainability rules of the Premier League.

Cashing in on the academy graduate will come in handy, and it is a decision the fans have to understand should he get sold.

Toby Collyer

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder is another option the Red Devils should consider selling this summer even though he will not fetch them plenty of money.

Three starts in 13 appearances this term tell the whole story, although a foot injury has kept him out for a while.

Rasmus Hojlund

The 22-year-old has struggled to have a huge and much-needed impact in the Man United colours, and they need a better number 9 if they want to challenge for the big trophies next term.

Joshua Zirkzee

The Dutchman is a decent player but he has never been a prolific goalscorer, and cashing in on him when he still has some value could be in the best interest of the Red Devils.

Alejandro Garnacho

The Argentine was linked with an exit in January and selling him will do their finances some good as he is an academy graduate.

However, Man United have to hold on to this gem given his huge potential, and Amorim has to find a way to get the best out of him.

The 17-year-old has yet to open his account in seven games for the senior team, but he has everything it takes to become a goalmachine once everything clicks and he starts to come to grasp with the demands of the Premier League.

Marcus Rashford

He has no future at Man United after falling out of favour under Amorim, and his impressive stint at Aston Villa should see top suitors emerge for his services in the summer.

The Dutch left-back has been on loan with PSV Eindhoven since January and is expected to seal another temporary or a permanent exit this summer.

Antony

An outstanding loan spell with Real Betis has yielded eight goals and seen his value go up, which is good news for Man United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ethan Wheatley

The 19-year-old striker became the 250th academy graduate to make his first-team debut for Man United against Sheffield United at Old Trafford last April, but he was shipped out on loan to League Two club Walsall for the remainder of the season in January.

He has hardly featured for them and is expected to return to Man United in the summer.

Jadon Sancho

Man United and the Chelsea loanee are expected to part ways at the end of the season, and while the club would love a permanent exit, his return of three goals and five assists in 29 Premier League games may not be enough to convince suitors to pay top dollar for him.

The 20-year-old joined League One club Rotherham United on loan for the remainder of the 2024-25 in January but played just once before returning to Carrington to receive treatment for a hairline foot fracture.
