United captain spurned a big chance to break the deadlock at Craven Cottage
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said he was affected by referee Chris Kavanagh prior to missing a penalty against Fulham.
Following a VAR review, Man Utd were awarded a spot-kick late in the first-half at Craven Cottage after Calvin Bassey was penalised for a foul on Mason Mount in the area.
As Fernandes placed the ball on the penalty spot, he was accidentally bumped into by the official.
Not much was made about the incident at the time, though the 30-year-old could be seen complaining before subsequently missing the spot-kick.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw, the midfielder admits not receiving an apology from Kavanagh “triggered” him in the moment but stopped short of using it as an excuse for blazing his effort over the bar.
He said: "Yes, I was upset. Obviously every penalty taker has their own routine, you have your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didn't apologise and that is what triggered me in the moment.
"But that is not the excuse for missing the penalty. I just had a very bad hit on the ball, I took my foot too much under the ball and that's why the ball ended up going over the bar.”
Fernandes’ miss proved costly as despite Man United taking the lead just before the hour mark thanks to an Rodrigo Muniz equaliser, they couldn’t hold on for all three points.
Substitute Emile Smith Rowe equalised for Fulham with his very first touch as both teams remain without a win at the start of the new Premier League season.
