Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 2 – Monday 30 December 8pm
Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Get in.
Finally I get to see us win in the League at Old Trafford and not just a win, the way we did it, class!
What a December we have had.
Exciting times for us all, especially with the football we are playing.
Can’t wait for the next game.’
Simon Ritter:
‘Revenge is a dish best served cold, they say, and this one-sided 2-0 was a long time coming.
Every player in black-and-white stripes, including the subs, did us proud.
The start was like the hare against the tortoise but the difference tonight was that our hares ran rings round their tortoises for nearly the entire match.
Sadly, Schar’s late booking will halt his partnership with Burn for the Spurs game on Saturday but on this form we should be able to cope.
Chelsea’s one point from nine has seen United close the gap and suddenly every team above us, barring Liverpool, are catchable.
Let’s make it a happy new year!’
Mark Jankowski:
‘Gary Neville described Man U a pound for pound the worst team in the league, on that showing he’s not wrong.
Newcastle flew out of the traps in a blistering start.
Isak continued his red-hot form finishing off an incisive attack.
The lead swiftly became two and really should have been three or four, as wave after wave of attack sliced through Man U.
Man U’s only real chances of the first 45 came from occasional sloppy play.
The home team looked mildly more threatening after the break but eventually our superior midfield regained control of the game.
In the end it was a very comfortable 2-0 win.
A Schar yellow card was the only negative on the night. A suspension that may very well end our winning run next weekend.
Still, we can revel in a famous win on a ground where we’ve not had many.’
David Punton:
‘A monumental night for the club. Massive. One for the ages.
Will be talked about for a long time. The Mancs. Beaten.
It was total football in the first half.
The home side were chasing our shadows as Howe’s team took them apart, 2-0 at the break and it should have been more.
Isak and Joelinton the headline grabbers but the whole team deserve praise as this stellar run continues.
Winning at Old Trafford. Once unheard of. Now expected.
It’s a huge stride forward.
Happy New Year – enjoy the party!’
Billy Miller:
‘Well, well, well.
Tonight was our biggest chance to end the Old Trafford league hoodoo and we only went and did it.
The first half hour or so we were outstanding and I don’t remember Man Utd having a shot.
We got a bit sloppy towards the end of the half but I think that was partly complacency from just how easy it had been.
Second half we were the better team but didn’t need to bother all that much. Man Utd are an embarrassment.
Newcastle Utd are flying.’
GToon:
‘If only I could bottle how I feel now.
Simply incredible.
We blew them away.
Should have been 3 or 4.
All the focus is about them from Sky, which was pretty poor.
We are a very entertaining team with some excellent players. We would have beaten any team tonight.
Our midfield are immense. We just are a team bang on form.
God knows what their manager is trying to do but I have a feeling Sky are about to spend the post-match 30 mins telling us.
Bye bye 2024 in style.
I loved that. Loved it!’
Matt Busby said…:
‘Where to start?
We won at Old Trafford in the league. And we were outstanding.
What a start. We could (should) have been even more comfortable at half time.
Isak fluffs another one-on-one after scoring a great header, then from an offside position hits an unbelievable shot into Onana’s top left hand corner. Disallowed.
Shortly after, we have the move of the game which sees Tonali’s effort come off the post. Unlucky.
The introduction of Mainoo settled the Mancs and some sloppiness on our part allowed them two great chances which fortunately went begging.
Second half I thought we sat back and I have to admit feeling some anxiety, especially when Maguire’s header hit the post.
Lewis Hall was excellent, again. And a special shout out to Dubravka whose footwork was superb. Take note Nick Pope.
In other news, Chelsea lost at Ipswich so 4th place is within striking distance.
The only downside this evening was Schar’s yellow card so he misses Spurs. Too early for Sven to make his return?’
Davey Hat-Trick:
‘Most of Tyneside thought we’d win this.
The pundits thought we’d win this.
My manure-supporting mate thought we’d win this.
Even the bookies thought we’d win this.
To this long-suffering fan, that was a recipe for disaster. But blow me down, we did win it, and in some style.
Tactics were spot-on – we tore into them from the get-go, and were 2-0 up in 20 minutes.
It could have been four or five at half time but we didn’t add to our tally.
The second half was more even, but we absorbed the pressure and were composed in possession. Another three points and another clean sheet.
As it turns out, everyone was right. We are a much, much better team than Manchester United, and deserved to be favourites.’
Bazoox:
‘Thank-you Eddie and the Hotrods and a Happy New Year.
This great run has given the whole area a boost.
I’ve got to be honest and say I really thought we would win tonight.
We had a great opening 20 minutes to show that there was only ever one true United on the pitch.
There is nothing now to stop us having a fantastic season in the great scheme of things.
Everyone is happy again, from the owners down to the tea ladies.
Spurs are next and the focus begins immediately.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Oh, if only Carlsberg did irony.
I’ve been coming to old Trafford since 1985 to watch us and am actually leaving disappointed to only win 2-0.
It should have been at least 4-0 by ht.
We keep hearing about turmoil at old Trafford but it’s not wor fault that their recruitment and coaching has been terrible.
So Man Utd fans, you can do us a favour and say hello to Sunlun next season.’
