Manchester City take on Brighton today at the Amex Stadium. The Premier League clash looms as a vital game for Pep Guardiola’s side. It is City’s final game before the upcoming international break. They also come into today’s game on the back of three consecutive losses in all competitions. A win against Fabian Hurzeler’s side would regain some of the momentum City have lost in recent weeks. But it won’t be an easy game against a quality Brighton side. Here is the latest City team news and predicted City starting eleven ahead of today’s match.
Pep Guardiola confirmed yesterday that Manchester City will be without five players for today’s match. Rodri, Oscar Bobb, Jack Grealish, John Stones and Ruben Dias are all out of today’s match.
The selection of Jack Grealish in the upcoming England squad did hint at his availability for today’s match. But Pep Guardiola told the media yesterday that Grealish is unavailable for today’s match. The England international is returning to full fitness after not playing since City’s 2-1 win over Wolves. Guardiola cut a frustrated figure with the situation when quizzed about Grealish’s selection in the England squad during his pre-game press conference.
Manchester City will head into today’s match with the same players available from the disappointing 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP on Tuesday evening.
Ederson: The Brazilian international conceded four against Sporting but he had little support from his defence. He has had a strong start to the season and there’s no reason to drop him for today’s match.
Kyle Walker: With Rico Lewis appearing tired in midweek Kyle Walker should start at right-back. Manchester City need their captain to return to his best today.
Manuel Akanji: The Swiss international put in his worst performance for some time against Sporting. But he should start today given City’s injuries in defence.
Nathan Ake: The Dutch international isn’t at 100% fitness. But needs must and he will likely start at the Amex Stadium today.
Josko Gvardiol: Another player who was well below his usual high standards against Sporting. He rarely plays two bad games in a row and must step up today.
Mateo Kovacic: Kovacic has stepped in Rodri’s role admirably this season. Given Brighton’s strength in midfield it’s a no brainer for him to start today.
Bernardo Silva: Another automatic selection. City need Bernardo at his best today to lift them out of their slump.
Phil Foden: Foden was easily Manchester City’s best player against Sporting. He is nearing his best form and could have a big say in today’s match.
Savinho: The Brazilian winger should retain his place in the starting lineup.
Matheus Nunes: Nunes has arguably been City’s best players over recent weeks. There’s an argument for him to start in midfield but I believe he’ll take his spot on City’s left wing.
Erling Haaland: Manchester City need their number 9 to put in a shift today. He had a poor game against Sporting but he did have his chances in Lisbon. If Haaland can lift his team will come with him it’s as simple as that.
