Officials at Manchester City would be required to spend upwards of another €100 million in order to finalise the ultimate January transfer window, according to reports.
That outlay follows a spend close to £130 million already this summer, having confirmed the signings of Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens, Vitor Reis from Palmeiras, and Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt this week alone.
It is a clear sign of intent from the Premier League champions, who continue to see the current roster of players faltering in various competitions, and the squad in desperate need of a refresh and rebuild in the next two transfer markets, including this month.
Much of Manchester City’s problems have centred around injuries this season, and the rearguard being hampered by issues while defensive midfield saw Rodri ruled out for the entirety of the campaign.
And while City officials have acted fast to recover their options in defence through new signings, the lack of a new defensive midfielder plus Kyle Walker’s imminent exit to AC Milan leaves them with work to do in the eyes of many.
According to the information of Italian newspaper TuttoSport, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, a staggering €100 million could be made via deals with Manchester City alone in the final days of the January market.
It is claimed that the Premier League champions will offer around €65 million for Andrea Cambiaso, while Juventus’ sporting director Cristiano Guintoli wants around €75 million for a sale of the versatile full-back while preferring to only depart with the player in the summer.
As for Douglas Luiz, who has emerged as a target in defensive midfield for City, the report states that the club want the Brazilian on a straightforward loan deal, which is ‘unwelcome’ in Turin and they are standing firm on the idea of a permanent sale at €40 million.
Manchester City could yet face competition from Chelsea in the race for Douglas Luiz, although the Premier League rivals are also interested in a loan agreement which does not appear to appeal to the Italians at this stage.
As for Cambiaso, it remains to be seen whether Manchester City deem such a top-level outlay as necessary with the games remaining this season, although struggles in the right-back position may encourage full-back recruitment.
As for outgoings alongside Kyle Walker and his imminent loan deal to AC Milan, it remains to be seen whether Manchester City will open themselves up to an agreement for James McAtee, with a number of high-profile clubs interested in a temporary swoop for the player.
